Prem Sagar Criticizes Adipurush Makers for Neglecting Ramayana
Prem Sagar, whose father Ramanand Sagar directed the famous TV show Ramayana, states that the decision to turn the epic into a movie was the first mistake made by the creators. Filmmaking is a business of creating art, and filmmakers make movies based on what people want and expect from an enjoyable film that is worth their money. Makers of movies sometimes have to compromise with the original meaning of the story to make money. In this case, the movie Adipurush writer Manoj Muntashir is being discussed.
Manoj is a smart person who knows a lot about his family history. I watched his videos on YouTube and he seems to be knowledgeable about his background. So if he wrote something like this, it could mean there were many other reasons for it related to making money,” says Sagar.
He says that when his dad chose to create Ramayana for TV, he was a big shot in the movie industry. But he knew that with TV, he could choose what to show, while cinema would limit his choices. TV makes money from advertisers, so the people who create TV shows can focus solely on making art without being influenced by money. My dad argued with Doordarshan and the Indian government because he believed that 22 minutes per episode was not sufficient to properly tell the story of Ramayan. “And that’s why the show became really big and popular,” Sagar explains.
The 53-year-old person explains that they’re not just talking about making changes in the Ramayana story, but in all sacred books from different religions. If you choose a topic that is connected to people’s beliefs and religious feelings, you must realize that you have a responsibility for it. You cannot pretend that cinema is not influenced by many money-related factors.
Sagar explains that people get angry because they feel hurt. He says that when you create your own art, you can do whatever you want because everyone interprets it differently. However, if you are sharing it with many people for them to use, you have a responsibility towards them. People are mad because they feel pain. But I am grateful that the creators have admitted their mistake without letting their pride get in the way. This is a very big thing.
