PS 2 Global Box Office Collection:
Mani Ratnam’s historical epic, Ponniyin Selvan: Part 2, also known as PS2, has concluded its box office journey on a high note. The film achieved a remarkable global gross of Rs. 345 crores, with the domestic earnings amounting to Rs. 215 crores and international collections reaching Rs. 130 crores. This places PS2 as the fourth highest-grossing Kollywood film globally, following 2.0, Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1, and Vikram, while ranking slightly below Endhiran in India. Within Tamil Nadu, the film stands as the sixth highest-grosser of all time.
Although the box office figures are impressive, Ponniyin Selvan: Part 2 received a comparatively subdued response due to a significant decline in collections compared to Part 1. The film fell short by one-third in India and three-fourths internationally in terms of revenue. It is common for film sequels, particularly those based on popular source material, to witness a drop in collections. In India, sequels often experience growth due to factors such as inflation and an expanded audience base over the course of 2-3 years.
However, in the case of Ponniyin Selvan, the first part had already achieved near capacity in its home state, leaving limited room for growth. While there could have been potential for growth in North India and other regions outside Tamil Nadu, where South Indian sequels typically perform well, the mixed reception of the first part in these areas resulted in a decline for Part 2.
Nevertheless, Ponniyin Selvan: Part 2 has proven to be a lucrative venture, showcasing impressive numbers in isolation from its predecessor. The film’s box office performance stands as a testament to the star cast’s popularity and the production’s overall success.
About PS 2:
The writers use drama and politics just to build up the tension in the second part. It is unbelievable how filmmaker Mani Ratnam really manages to keep one engaged with so many dramas. The face-to-face scene between Aditya Karikalan and Nandini would go down as one of the best cinematic moments of Tamil cinema. It’s the build-up and mood setting leading up to one of the PS 2’s best scenes.
