Veteran actor-director breathed his last on May 3 in Chennai. Reportedly, he was undergoing treatment for liver-related problems at his residence for the last two weeks. This news has come as a big shock to everyone in the Tamil film industry. Details about his funeral and cremation will be out in the coming hours. He was known for his comedic timing and self-deprecating humour. In his career of 35 years, he acted in more than 450 films. He is survived by wife Usha and son Harish.
Popular Tamil actor and director Manobala passes away on 3 May. The actor was unwell for the past few months and was undergoing treatment for age-related issues. Manobala is said to have breathed his last at his residence in Chennai. His mortal remains will be kept at his residence on LV Prasad Road in Saligramam, Chennai.
Actor Manobala apparently had liver problems when he passed away at his home on Wednesday morning. The veteran actor had already undergone angioplasty in January after he complained of chest discomfort.
Actor-director GM Kumar was among the few celebrities who broke the news. He took to Twitter to share the sad news with his followers.

Veteran actor Rajinikanth paid tribute to his ‘dear friend’ Manobala on Twitter in Tamil. Rajinikanth’s tweet could be translated as, “I am deeply saddened by the passing away of my dear friend Manobala, a noted director and actor. My condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace.”

Producer G Dhananjayan also took to Twitter and wrote that he was shocked to know about his death. He tweeted, “Shocking and it is unbelievable that such a dear person and good friend Manobala Sir has passed away. Our heartfelt condolences to the family. may his soul rest in peace. Actor Gautam Karthik also tweeted, “Heartbroken to hear that director/actor Manobala sir is no more with us. Really a pleasure working with you sir! You will definitely be missed! Actor’s life and career:
He made his acting debut in 1979 with Bharathiraja’s Puthiya Varpugal. Over the years, he starred in supporting roles in several hundred films. Reportedly, he joined Bharathiraja as an assistant director in reference to Kamal Haasan. His last on-screen appearance was in Kajal Aggarwal’s Ghosti. The talented star was best known for his comic roles.
In 1982, he made his directorial debut with Agaya Gangai and went on to direct around 25 films. Some of his popular films include Pillai Nila, Oorkavalan, En Purushanthan Enakku Mattumthan, Karuppu Vellai, Mallu Vetti Minor and Parambariyam.
Apart from appearing in serials, he also directed a handful of television serials. He also made a name for himself in the industry as a producer. He appeared as a contestant on Kuku With Komali in 2022.
It was a bit later on in his career that he made a name for himself as a comedian and supporting actor who has worked in over 300 films over the course of five decades.
Some of the veteran actor’s most notable acting features include Ghajini, Abhiyum Naanum, Thupakki, and others. He has shared screen space with Vijayakanth, Sathyaraj, Mohan, Rajinikanth, Ajith, and Vijay.
He also produced couple of movies like Sathuranga Vettai and Pambu Sattai. Manobala is survived by his wife and son.
